October will be a festive month of special bamboo sales for us. On Monday the 13th we will be offering small to medium sized plants of the most colorful and exotic at the San Diego Horticulture Society Meeting in conjunction with a program “Bamboo, the Earth and Us.” For more information go to http://www.sdhortsoc.org/meetings.htm. The cost is $5.00 for non-members.

Then on Saturday the 25th we will offer a large cross section of all our bamboos at the much-anticipated sale by San Diego Chapter of the American Bamboo Society, which also features an auction of rare bamboo. One can often find species that have been newly introduced from other countries after undergoing rigorous inspection and approval by the USDA. For further details visit http://www.abssocal.org/calendar.html.

In May 2008 we installed an entire new demonstration garden dedicated to running bamboos. The site has 14 beds, each planted with different species and surrounded with rhizome barrier. This running bamboo garden will be used to illustrate the ease of installing the barrier while adding to our already awesome collection of mature in ground specimens. As most of you bamboo lovers have learned, there’s a BIG difference between looking at pictures of mature bamboo and seeing, hearing and feeling the real deal! Please stop in for a personal tour if you are in the area.

Did you know that the shoots of most bamboos are edible? Some are tastier than others and thus more widely cultivated for culinary use. Apparently our nursery mascot, Macy, recognizes that Phyllostachys bissetii is one of the first species of the genus to shoot in spring and he definitely finds them to his liking! The cultivar pictured is the dwarf form of P. bissetii which is smaller and even hardier (-15F/-26C) than the species, staying under 18′ (5.5m). The overall look is a deep forest green color with culms that contrast in lime green to yellow. Both the specie and the dwarf make striking potted specimens!

In addition to the Garden Marketplace of nursery displays, this 3 day extravaganza featured two huge exhibit halls filled with over 1400 exhibitors running the gamut of every industry related to home embellishment that you can imagine. There was also an additional building dedicated primarily to landscape displays on various themes done by the Garden Masters. This is always a great venue for getting a feel for what homeowners in our locale are seeking and a chance to personally invite them out to our display gardens.

As you can see in the photos, we have a new mascot we’ve nicknamed Moso. She was created by a local sculptor who also happens to be a good friend of ours. Moso not only fits right in with the plant decor, but she also likes to travel so you’ll be seeing more of her in the future. And if any of you would like to have your own custom metal sculpture please let us know and we’ll get you in contact with the artist.

For those of you who missed us at the Del Mar show, you can look forward to seeing us at the upcoming Flower Fields Exotic Plant Sale on May 2-3, the Encinitas Garden Festival also on May 3rd and at the California Grown Show in Pomona on June 4 with subsequent nursery tour days on June 5 and 6.
